Should I join a gym?

There are some really important things to consider when you start your weight loss journey.

Although being a member of a gym is not necessary it is beneficial in more than 5 ways. Here are some things to have in mind about using a gym as part of your fat loss strategy:

  • You pay a dear price for membership, putting pressure on you to use it
  • Use music to your advantage
  • Looking at girls while exercising will get you motivated. It’s like having your target in front of you while you work out!
  • Having hot looking girls in tight workout clothes gets your heart beating faster!
  • Choose a gym that is convenient for your optimal workout time. This means that if you are most likely to work out in the evenings, find a gym close to your home.

Should I pay a personal trainer when I am working out?

Again, there are no right or wrong rules regarding this. Not everyone will benefit from a personal trainer, mostly because personal trainers come in all shades of quality.
Some trainers are great, with a solid educational background and years of experience. And then you have those that take some 30 min, $50 online course and get all their “wisdom” from various internet site (oh, if only all fitness sites on the interwebs were as solid as this one :)

But in general, I think that a personal trainer is a wise choice If only for one month, if the trainer has an above average degree, he/she should be able to give you a sound understanding of how to use all the equipment in the gym. It’s really important to use the equipment in the gym correctly. Not only to prevent injury, but a guy using the gear incorrectly looks really really stupid! And girls notice these things.

There are plenty of great resources online with video tutorials on how to properly lift weights. But one of the most important things to keep in mind is that do not jerk the weights, try to isolate the muscle(s) you are working on and don’t try to lift too heavy, it’ll offset the things I just mentioned.

Is it better to have a male trainer or a female trainer? Not too sure about this one. I have only had a guy as a trainer, and think that perhaps in the beginning of your regime a guy would be better. He probably pushes you more and you aren’t as self aware if a guy is training you. But I could see the benefits of getting a female trainer once you are into your journey and have lost some weight and gotten some self-confidence. She could give you some tips on dressing and even if she is impressed by your success and feels your a nice guy, might set you up with another client or even a friend.
